The Role of Information Technology In Today’s World

What is information technology?
Information technology is the technology used to store, manipulate, distribute or create information.  All these can be summed up easily – It’s having knowledge, and knowledge comes from having information. Gaining knowledge through information is the role of ‘information technology’ IT in today’s informed world.
IT is a set of tools that can help provide the right people with the right information at the right time.  Though IT is not a solution to every thing, for IT to work, people must learn how to use it. So you can not assume that IT will work for you to share information across the organization when people in the organization don’t know how to use it. Below I have listed a few roles of information technology in various sectors.

1.  The Role of Information Technology In An Organization:
  • Communication: Many organizations take electronic mail ”email” as a basic form of communication among employees, customers, business partners and suppliers. The simplicity of electronic mail ”email” makes it easier and faster to exchange information across departments in an organization. The all process saves time and money. However, more emerging forms of communications have surfaced and they also make communication easier. These include video conferencing systems, Voice over internet telephones ‘‘VIOP’’, live text and video chat services like ”SKYPE” and smart-phones.
  • Data Management:  There is no need to keep papers about every detail in an organization. Now, organizations have digitized most of their data. This data is stored in a database and employees access and share this information through a decentralized computing system. In a decentralized computing environment, the organization splits computing power and locates it in business areas as well as on the desktop of knowledge workers. So employees and managers can send queries to the database and retrieve data and use it in way required. This saves time and it also improves on decision making with in the organization.
    • Management Information Systems: With the use of MIS, data can be accessed and used in a given period of time. MIS reports summarize or aggregate information to support decision-making tasks. So, MIS’s are systems that have information-processing responsibilities that include information through online analytical processing (OLAP) and conveying information to whoever needs it. It is very important for employees and managers to access data anytime for quick decision making.
  • 2.  The Role of Information Technology In Banking Industry:
    • Remote banking:  Now banks have facilities like online banking, ATM’S and mobile banking service which enable perform banking needs at any given time of the day.  With a simple user interface, users can use their computers or mobile phones to move money across accounts and they can also get financial details like bank statements and account balance with out going to a physical bank. This process saves time to both the customer and the bank.
    •  Centralized Information:   Banks can operate more than 20 branches in a specific area, but the use of information technology to centralize all the information on all these branches, makes it easy to access information both by the bank employees and the customer.
    •  Credit cards or smart cards:  Now banks issue out plastic cards to their customers so that they can perform transaction anytime anywhere.  For example , customers can buy any thing without carrying cash money, but they will use a smart card like ‘’VISA ELECTRON’’ to pay for products either online or at the shopping center.
  • 3. The Role of Information Technology In Student’s Life:
    • Easy access to educational material:  Today , students can access books and research notes online. Unlike in the past when a student had to borrow a book from a physical library for a specific period, now days they can access most this data inform of e-books or electronic libraries. Library mobile Apps have been developed to enable students get library material on their mobile phones. Gadgets like Ipad , Amazon Kindle book reader have simplified students life.
    •  Ability to study from anywhere: Online education has unlocked many boundaries for students. A student can now study from any were and work from any where. For example, accounting courses like ACCA can be done online and students who qualify can work from anywhere, this increases on their chances of competing for high qualified jobs in developed markets around the world .

Life is the sum of experiences that we encounter as we go through life. Day to day struggles and triumphs are experienced by all of the world's creatures. As human beings, when we encounter a challenge, we have freedom to choose how to react. Every decision that we make leads us down a different road. We will never come to exactly the same crossroads. Every decision the we make has significance. The tiniest choice that we make reverberates throughout the entire universe.

E-commerce

E-commerce (electronic commerce or EC) is the buying and selling of goods and services, or the transmitting of funds or data, over an electronic network, primarily the Internet. These business transactions occur either business-to-business, business-to-consumer, consumer-to-consumer or consumer-to-business. The terms e-commerce and e-business are often used interchangeably. The term e-tail is also sometimes used in reference to transactional processes around online retail.
E-commerce is conducted using a variety of applications, such as emailfax, online catalogs and shopping carts, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), File Transfer Protocol, and Web services. Most of this is business-to-business, with some companies attempting to use email and fax for unsolicited ads (usually viewed as spam) to consumers and other business prospects, as well as to send out e-newsletters to subscribers.
The benefits of e-commerce include its around-the-clock availability, the speed of access, a wider selection of goods and services, accessibility, and international reach. Its perceived downsides include sometimes-limited customer service, not being able to see or touch a product prior to purchase, and the necessitated wait time for product shipping.
To ensure the security, privacy and effectiveness of e-commerce, businesses should authenticate business transactions, control access to resources such as webpages for registered or selected users, encrypt communications and implement security technologies such as the Secure Sockets Layer.

The Malaysian Youth And The Challenges Faced

Most of the problems facing today’s youth are not restricted to any one ethnic or religious group, but affect young people generally.
Most discussions on youth have focused on issues such as drug abuse, crime, violence, sexuality and poverty and in addition to these, today’s youth are afflicted by new challenges.

The most significant problem faced by the youth today is an identity crisis in realizing the true personality and potential.

The youth nowadays also faces lack of self confidence and low self esteem in establishing themselves within peers and in the society.

Another dilemma faced by these youngsters is an ever confusion and ambiguity concerning moral issues surrounding their lifestyle.

The negative impact of the electronic media and competitiveness in education which is often considered as an uneven playing field where excellence is no guarantee also contributes to problems faced by youths.

While religion is core in engaging the youth through calling to the worship of God and fighting against disbelief as a form of backwardness and corruption, it remains a subjective approach for religious inclination has always been a personal matter in an individual’s life.

One may define the ideal youth as a balanced individual exhibiting a highly spiritual life informed by absolute moral values and whose behavior demonstrates qualities such as righteousness, honesty, humility and conscientiousness in everything he/she does.

Historically, the older generation has managed to transmit their beliefs, values, traditions, customs, worldviews and institutions to the younger members of their societies.

This was achieved largely because of the impact of agencies of socialization, such as the family, religion and the schools.

Today the impact of these institutions has been challenged and undermined by new forces, particularly the internet and the television.

The sad fact thou is that we might be witnessing an erosion of traditional systems and institutions.
As such the family and religion now have a minimal impact on the average youngster.

The values emphasized today include individualism, Godlessness, materialism, secularism and rationalism.
It is the youth who are encountering the most serious challenge to his/her faith under the impact of godless culture of modernity.

Best minds in our society are not socialized by religious institutions.

The emphasis is on competitiveness, academic success, career goals, income and social mobility
Little or no attention is given to preparing tomorrows leadership.

There is no emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem solving.

We are preparing followers, imitators’ conformists, and not leaders, innovators or problem solvers.
The youth is being asked to give up certain family and social values that were an integral part of their identity, and adopt in its place a sense of self-alienation, and become a self-estranged imitator of everything “modern”.

In closing, let us recognize that we have a serious challenge on our hands which is to ensure that today’s children and tomorrow’s adults would experience a better world than we are living in today.
We should all work towards this objective and not wait for a crisis to occur and then react, let us be prepared.

My hometown: Tampin, Negeri Sembilan.

My hometown, Tampin, a small town which located in Negeri Sembilan. However, there are many people who do not know the existence of this town. Therefore, I have attracted some information and pictures to introduce my hometown: Tampin.

Tampin
Tampin; is both a town and a district in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, however part of the town spills over into the neighbouring state of Malacca, as it is located along the Malacca-Negeri Sembilan border. The district covers 129.49 square kilometres (50.00 sq mi) and is further divided into four adat socio-political provinces; Repah, Keru, Tebong and Tampin Tengah.

History and etymology
Tampin gets its name from the container or pouch weaved from the pandanus fronds. The container was used to store condiments such as the kelamai or dodol and the shrimp paste belacan. The district of Tampin is also called Luak Tampin as the word luak is the local term for district. On 11 March 1889, the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Cecil Smith, held a meeting with the rulers of Jelebu, Sungai Ujong, Rembau, Seri Menanti and Tampin. The purpose of this meeting was to combine the districts to better manage them under British rule. Tampin, Rembau and Seri Menanti agreed to the proposal and were united as the Seri Menanti Confederation. The newly formed confederation accepted Martin Lister as its first British Resident.[5]Tampin was originally governed by the Rembau administration. After the Naning War in 1832 Raja Ali declared himself the ruler of Seri Menanti and his son-in-law, Syed Shaaban, as the ruler of Rembau. This enraged other rulers of Negeri Sembilan as they had no right to the posts. In 1834 a civil war ensued, which resulted in Raja Ali and Syed Shaaban retreating to Tampin and the area from Mount Tampin to Putus Hill being removed from Rembau.[1] This area consisting of the provinces Repah, Keru, Tebong and Tampin Tengah formed the district known as Tampin. Syed Shaaban became the first ruler of Tampin and proclaimed himself the title Tunku Besar Tampin. The district is one of the original nine states collectively known as Negeri Sembilan, which means "Nine States" in Malay.
After the independence of Malaya in 1957, Negeri Sembilan and its districts started forming local administrative councils. Formerly known as the Tampin Town Board, the Tampin District Council was established on July 1, 1980 as a result from a restructure of the state via the Local Government Act of 1976.

Transportation
Tampin is well served by the Malaysian transportation system. It is connected to both North-South Expressway/Exit Alor Gajah/Simpang Ampat, Malacca) and the West Malaysian railways system. In fact, Gemas which is part of Tampin district, is the meeting point of West Malaysia's eastern and western railway lines. The Pulau Sebang/Tampin railway station is in Pulau Sebang, which is on the Malaccan side, about 1 kilometer from the town centre. Furthermore, since Malacca Town does not have a railway station, people living in Malacca normally have to travel to the station in order to get on a train. There was a track from Pulau Sebang to Melaka before World War II but it was dismantled by the Japanese during the war for the construction of the infamous Burmese Death Railway.

Administrative
The Negeri Sembilan side of the town is governed by the Tampin District Council, while the Malacca side of the town is governed by the Alor Gajah District Council.
The district of Tampin is divided into 3 mukims namely Repah, Gemencheh and Gemas.

How to Start an Online Business?

If you're ready to be in charge of your own destiny, but don’t have the capital to buy a franchise or open up a storefront, consider starting an online business. When your store is online, you can reach millions of customers instead of whoever happens to wander in - plus, you don't have to pay for retail space. However, like with any business, you'll need an excellent product and a solid marketing plan. See Step 1 to learn what it takes to start your business online.

Part 1 of 3: Setting Up Your Business
1
Define your product or service. Starting an online business gives you the benefit of having access to millions of customers, but you also have a lot more competition. No matter what you're trying to sell, you can bet that hundreds more online retailers have a similar idea. What differentiates your product from everyone else's? To help your product stand apart from the rest, you'll need to find a niche.[1]
  • Let’s say you make jewellery—but so do a few million other people. What makes yours different? If one-of-a-kind jewellery (or another product) is your gig, make sure it's truly original.
  • Offer expertise in an area. Even if the product itself isn't very unique, your expertise might be a strong selling point. If you're selling a line of skincare products, for example, it helps if you have a degree in a field related to skin health.
  • Check into the competition. Figure out what isn't already being offered, and find a way to fill the hole with your product.
2
Register your business. Your business needs to be registered according to your state's laws. Choose an official business name and fill out the appropriate paperwork to make your business official.
  • Before you register your business, it can help to have a business plan laid out. Consider your production costs, shipping costs, taxes, and web hosting fees.
  • Know the business regulations in your state, and be sure to comply when you get things up and running.
3
Register a domain name. Like the name of any other business, go for something short and catchy that will be easy for people to remember. Visit the website of a domain registration company and test out some of the names you're interested in to determine whether they're available. Once you land on a good name, go ahead and register it.

4
Get a web hosting service. There are free hosting services to be found, but if you're serious about running an online business longterm, consider paying for one that offers all the services you need. You'll be less likely to run into problems when your business starts to take off. Choose a hosting service that allows for growth.[3]
  • Some hosting services are highly structured, allowing you to choose from among different templates to create a website quite easily. Others allow you to do your own programming, giving you greater flexibility.
Part 2 of 3: Creating Your Online Store
1
Create a stylish and functional website. Elegant or funky, classical or hipster, your online store should reflect what you’re selling. No matter what your style is, it's important to give of a professional air. Since you won't be able to earn people's trust in person, your website will have to do the selling for you. Your site should be engaging, and most importantly, easy for customers to use when they're ready to make a purchase.[4]
  • Make sure your site design matches your product. For example, if you make traditionally styled diamond jewelry, having a website that looks like shredded cardboard with edgy fonts and images taped to the cardboard would tend to drive away your potential customers.
  • Consider setting up an online portfolio. Whether you are a programmer who specializes in Javascript, a graphic designer who works on commissions, a plumber who is on call 24/7, or a copywriter who will write about anything at all, having an exemplary website where potential clients can evaluate your work is crucial to your online business success.
  • You don’t have to design the website yourself—there are professional designers who are more than up to the task, plus ecommerce websites will offer dozens of appropriate templates for you. If you know in advance what you want, you’ll make selecting a designer or a template that much easier.
  • When designing your site you need to remember to focus on what is important. Your ultimate goal is to make your site simple and easy to use.
  • Your customers should have to make no more than 2 clicks in order to land on the page where they can make a purchase.
  • The top of every page should have a link to your shopping cart if its an ecommerce store
  • Buttons should be large and clear to read and input boxes should be large and easy to enter your information
  • Less is more. Don’t be wordy when you don’t need to on payment pages
  • Make sure your logo at the top of the page always links to the homepage
  • If you have dark backgrounds use light text and vice versa.
2
Get ecommerce software. You'll need this so your customers can view your products, enter their information and make a secure purchase. The software safely stores customer information. Don't skimp in this area, since the ecommerce software you choose will make a big difference in how easy it is for customers to feel secure buying something from your store.
  • You can also use an all-inclusive ecommerce web service. Sites such as Shopify and Volusion offer competitive packages, with free templates, custom packages, credit card processing, and more. Ecommerce web services makes it easy to sell your products on the web, without a lot of overhead. There are no custom interfaces or templates to work with; you simply create an online storewithin the framework of the service.
3
Set up a merchant account. Service businesses in the past had to generally rely on cash or check—setting up an entire credit card processing system was a thankless, expensive task at best. Using a service such as PayPal makes it possible to accept virtually any form of credit or debit card for your services, and includes dispute resolution should the need arise (and it will arise).

Part 3 of 3: Selling Your Services
1
Add catchy content to your site. Focus on your key areas of expertise, and display them professionally. Much like you would do when having potential employers contact references, put your best foot forward for potential clients. Include descriptions, where appropriate or necessary.
  • Don't use jargon. If you are offering technical expertise, include descriptions that appeal to your client base, not your peers. For example, if you are showing that you can code with PHP and AJAX, don't say "in this case, if the input field is empty (str.length==0), the function clears the content of the txtHint placeholder and exits the function." The person who needs you to work on their site will just scratch their head and say "huh?" Say, instead, "Start entering text into this field, and it will auto-complete."
2
Be social. Whatever your business, whatever your venue, keeping your name in the the air is key to internet success. Have a business account on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. If your business is graphically oriented, have accounts on Flickr and Tumblr as well. Whenever there is news of any kind—a new contract, a new page, a new entry, a new photo—cross-post it to all your social media sites. Also make sure those sites link back to your main website, and that your website has links to all of them.

3
Become an affiliate marketer. There are many companies and webmasters who use affiliate programs to boost their online sales, and most of these affiliate programs are free to join. When you sign up for an affiliate program, an affiliate link with a unique affiliate ID will be assigned to you. The affiliate link is used for marketing the products of your merchant. When a visitor buys an item through your affiliate link, you earn affiliate commission.
  • For example, if you are an affiliate marketer for Musician's Friend, an online musical instrument retailer, you can advertise their products on your site. If a person visits your site, and clicks on the link that takes them to the Musician's Friend website, and they purchase an instrument within a certain amount of time (24 hours or more, typically), you get a commission on the sale.
4
Add Google AdSense advertisements to your blog or website. Google’s AdSense is a revenue-sharing opportunity for small, medium and large web sites that places ads for goods and services that are relevant to the content of your site, targeted to the people who frequent your pages. In turn, you get paid a small amount when the ad is either displayed on your page, or clicked on.
